George W. had a guardian to handle his part of the N. B. De Pauw estate but I don't have a name or the paperwork.

I have a great deal of information on the family of Rachel Gabbert (Lockhart, Brittain) and would be happy to share with you. He appears in the census in 1860 Clay, Owen, IN with his entire family. James Thomas, Charlotte, George Washington (III), and Martha. The surname is recorded as Britton in that record. In 1870, he, Minerva and the 2 boys are recorded (Brittin) in the Liberty, Pulaski, Missouri census. There is a homesteading land grant. His daughter Charlotte has married Matthew Brinson (23 Sep 1866, Owen County, Indiana) but appears in the 1870 census in MO as well. They return to IN by the 1880 census where George W. and Minerva are back in Clay, Owen Co and have their 9 year old grandson George Brinson living with them. The various census records would place George W. Jr.'s DOB between 1827-1834 in IN. He appears to have died prior to the 1900 census. Minerva Jane dies in Greene Co. in 1920 at age 87.

I notice that the marriage to Rachel (Gabbart) Lockhart is recorded as being 10 Jan 1831 Washington Co. So, I guess that the the DOB for GW Jr. is probably 1831-1834

George W. Sr. appears in the 1850 Clay, Owen, IN census with his new wife, Charlotte Manes, who he married 12 May 1847 in Clay, Owen, IN. (Charlotte is Minerva Jane's sister). He can be followed through the 1870 census. The census ages suggest a DOB approximately 1805 in VA. He has 4 additional children with Charlotte: Martha, Thomas C., Joseph, and Mary Ann.

There is also a land purchase recorded in Aug 1839 from an 1820 land sale to GW Brittain.Darahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18217463930669698158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4310641851618233615.post-5789860654482260532010-01-26T04:24:28.428-08:002010-01-26T04:24:28.428-08:00I should also have added that George W. had to hav...I should also have added that George W. had to have been the son of Rachel (Gabbert, Lockhart) Brittain or he could not have been added to the will of N. My husband is a descendent of George W. Brittain. Up until now, Rachel Lockhart was one of a couple candidates for his mother. However, I think that the Will you mention makes it very likely that Rachel was his parent. Why would anyone add an unrelated minor heir to an estate? It looks like there was a "custody fight" for the Lockhart children. Clearly, George Brittain Sr. did not raise them. Anyway, it is all fascinating.Darahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18217463930669698158noreply@blogger.com
